This homemade lotion idea was from the time my sister made it for herself. She started making her own lotion due to her eczema and so she can apply a clean body lotion on her skin. I liked the way it feels on my body right after I take a warm shower. This is the perfect DIY lotion that I have made. The more essential oils you put the stronger the sent will be. This DIY lotion can be great for gifts to close friends and co-workers!

The picture down below shows how creamy it is. Yes, it is oily but it is said that jojoba oil is a natural oil that is close to what the body produces. DIY lotions are the best because you can change the recipe according to what you like. Also, down below (in a few paragraphs) you can find what essential oils you would prefer using or buying.

How to make homemade lotion?

In order to create this fluffy homemade lotion is to use a hand mixer. This tool is crucial for a fluffy and creamy result.

Shea butter is thick and dense, we need to melt it down. By doing this we can mix the jojoba oil thoroughly with the shea butter. Shea butter is expensive so adding the jojoba oil will make it last longer too! Which is a plus!! If you don’t want to use jojoba oil, you can switch it out with: almond oil or coconut oil.

For the shea butter to melt, we will use a small pot with a medium to large bowl over it. In the pot, add water until it reaches the middle or three quarters. Place the bowl on top while having the fire on low to medium heat. Make sure to use mitts because the bowl will get HOT! Once it is melted down, it will look transparent, glassy, & like oil. Transfer the bowl to the fridge, and wait for 2.5-4 hours or over night (if you want). I waited for about 3 hours until it looked cloudy, solid & white.

Next is to add some essential oils, the fun part of this! I like to add tea tree oil because it is a natural germ fighting element. The ratio of adding tea tree oil to lotion is 1 tsp. of tea tree for 32 ounces of lotion. For some scent, I added lavender, eucalyptus, & rose essential oils.

Oils also speed up the time to heal the places you decide to put the lotion on! If you aren’t up for making your own lotion, I recommend to add it to your own lotion you already have.

*I am not a professional, I researched on my own on what kind of essential oils are good for the skin.*

Watch how I made it! You can do equal amount of jojoba oil and shea butter said in the video, but I prefer paying more to have more shea butter than jojoba oil. More pricey if you use more shea butter.

DIY lotion (vegan & cruelty free)

Making a DIY lotion at home is beneficial for so many reasons. You know all the products that will go on your skin. I love making this lotion because it is fun, relaxing, easy, and affordable. Using a hand mixer helps it double in size.
Prep Time5 minutes
Active Time20 minutes
Total Time25 minutes
Keyword: DIY lotion, Essential oils, homemade lotion, Jojoba oil, Shea Butter
Yield: 10 oz.

Equipment

  • hand mixer
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • spatula
  • small pot
  • medium-large bowl that is heat/microwave safe/oven safe
  • Mitts heat resistant gloves
  • spoon

Materials

  • 3 fl oz. jojoba oil
  • 7 oz. shea butter
  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  • 5 drops rose essential oil
  • 5 drops eucalyptus oil
  • 3 drops lavender

Instructions

  • In the small-medium sized pot, add water until it is 3/4th full on low to medium heat. Place the bowl on top of the pot. The bowl will be hot so use mitts. Then add in the 7 oz. shea butter. Wait until fully melt (looks light yellowish). Next add the jojoba oil 3 floz. and mix together with a metal spoon.
  • Use the gloves/mitts to place the hot bowl in the fridge. Leave a matt under the bowl so that it doesn't effect your fridge. Leave for 2.5- 4 hours or over night if you wish to. Wait until it is completely solid to proceed with the next steps.
  • With the hand mixer, mix for about 10 minutes straight. You will see it double in size. Next add in the essential oils! Mix for a few minutes again.
  • Transfer it to a glass or reusable plastic jar with a spatula.

Notes

  1. If you do not like jojoba oil, you can use almond oil.
  2. It would be very difficult to do this DIT lotion recipe without the hand-mixer. I recommend to just add the essential oils to your existing lotion you are currently using.
  3. Search what a hand mixer looks like.
  4. The lotion is a bit more oily than regular lotion because it doesn’t have.
  5. Best applied after a shower or washing your hands, for better absorbing results.
