What is Jackfruit?
Jackfruit is a fruit tree. It is a substitute to replace it as a healthy alternative for meat. The exterior of the jackfruit looks green, but inside it is yellow. It has a meaty flesh texture like pork and chicken. The fruit can be eaten savory and sweet, which is one of its best components. Jackfruit can be used in smoothies, Filipino desserts, tacos, pulled BBQ pork, and more. How to make Jackfruit Tacos
Buy the right Jackfruit
For this recipe to work, you need green young jackfruit that is in water. Do not purchase jackfruit that is in sugar or syrup. Look at the ingredient list to find out if you bought the right jackfruit. Below is one brand I had purchased from Trader Joes to make this Jackfruit Vegan Tacos.
Drain the Jackfruit
Make sure to drain them and pat them dry with a reusable towel. How I shredded the jackfruit was from using my hands or using a food processor. Although, when using a food processor you need to pulse a few times so it prevents it from mushing.
Spices
The spices used to flavor the jackfruit vegan tacos are important. Spices I used are
- Cumin
- Turmeric
- Chili powder
- Smoked Paprika or paprika will do
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- salt
- pepper
Marinate
For the marinate for the jackfruit, I used ketchup, soy sauce, maple syrup, and liquid smoke. For other jackfruit taco recipes, people used tomato sauce or cubed tomatoes. I used anything that was accessible to me and that was ketchup. The flavors turned out to be impeccable.
Baking
To drain more moisture out of the jackfruit is to bake it. This helps with decreasing the sliminess of the jackfruit. Use a pan that is flat and big enough to fit it evenly. Best to leave it as flat as possible so that it can dehydrate. I baked it for 30 minutes in total. One side for 15 minutes and flip it over to bake for another 15 minutes.
